EPI-NO Childbirth Training System
THE EPI-NO CHILDBIRTH TRAINING SYSTEM, FOR A HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER DELIVERY
The EPI-NO® is a device that all pregnant women should consider using to prepare themselves for the most healthful and successful delivery possible. First-time mothers especially will find the benefits of the EPI-NO childbirth system remarkable.
Developed in Germany in 1999, the EPI-NO childbirth training system is the product of research produced through collaboration between medical doctors, gynecologists, engineers, midwives, and, of course, mothers-to-be. In only a few years the EPI-NO has received the backing of researchers, medical specialists, delivery room specialists, and mothers around the globe.
Published scientific studies have repeatedly shown this device and system to reduce the frequency of episiotomies, one of the most common surgeries performed on women worldwide. The EPI-NO has been found to shorten secondary labor, reduce the need for anesthesia during delivery, and quicken the time before couples can resume the normal activities of a complete relationship.
Before You Begin Your EPI-NO Childbirth Training
The EPI-NO consists of the following parts:
- An inflatable balloon
- A gauge to indicate pressure (this will allow you to measure training progress, but does not indicate balloon dimensions)
- A hand-operated air pump
- An outflow valve to relieve pressure
- A tube for inflation
The first thing you should do before actually using the EPI-NO childbirth system is practice balloon inflation. This is to confirm the unit is in proper working order and will also familiarize you with its operation.
Begin a trial run by making sure the pressure release valve is shut then giving the hand pump about ten squeezes. Next, release the pressure by opening the valve. The balloon should return to its original size. If this process reveals anything but smooth operation, or if you detect any indication that the unit has been damaged in any way, do not use it.
We recommend beginning your childbirth training with EPI•NO approximately three weeks in advance of your due-date. With the EPI-NO, your are able to train when you want and in the privacy of your own home. Training everyday for up to twenty minutes will yield optimal results.
Using the EPI-NO Childbirth System
The EPI-NO should be inserted approximately two-thirds the way into the vagina. EPI-NO’s shape is engineered to conform to the vaginal opening and remain stable. It can be fed into the vagina with a rotating movement.
Once the balloon is inserted properly, use the hand pump to inflate it gently. While the balloon is pumped up with the right hand in steps, it can be held in position with the left hand between the index and middle finger. Women should stop inflation if it becomes uncomfortable.
The training system allows the mother to simulate and become familiar with the feeling of pushing she will experience during delivery. In addition, this process is designed to dilate the vagina.
Over a 2 to 3-week period the vagina and perineum gradually adapt to accommodate greater volumes during penetration. You can follow the progress of your training by using the gauge to monitor the balloon’s air pressure. The kit also comes with a printed stencil that enables you to measure the balloon after it has been removed from the body.
It is advisable to wash hands carefully with soap and water prior to using EPI-NO. Use soap and water to clean the EPI-NO after each training session.
